Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) is a national association of independent lawyers who specialise in what is known as older client law: making a will; tax planning and protecting assets; trusts; probate; living wills; powers of attorney; Court of Protection; paying for care; NHS continuing care funding; and elder abuse.
To become a fully accredited member of SFE, lawyers are required to have specialist training in older client law and to have spent a substantial amount of time working with older and/or vulnerable clients and so have a wealth of experience to draw on. Members of SFE are also qualified in older client care, which means they are trained to understand some of the issues of getting older – hearing, sight, mobility, capacity and dementia – and provide support to their clients to ensure their wishes are understood. They also learn the skills to help them check that their clients are not being pressured, coerced or abused. As members of SFE, they are also required to keep these skills up to date with regular training.
If you or someone in your family would like some advice and help from someone who has the appropriate training and skills contact Beers Solicitors. Sonia Hems is based at the Kingsbridge office and is the only fully accredited member of the SFE in the area. Sonia can be contacted on 01548 857000 or at sonia.hems@beersllp.com. Emma Cladi is based at Beers Plymouth office and is also a fully accredited member and she can be contacted on 01752 246000 or at emma.cladi@beersllp.com.
